RealNetworks Widens Lead in Media Player Usage
RealNetworks®, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK - news) today announced that the latest Nielsen//NetRatings data confirms the widening lead for RealPlayer® formats as the preferred Internet streaming media formats.

RealPlayer content was played by 25.3 million US home users during the month of June, more than two and a half times the number of any other media player format, according to Nielsen//NetRatings, a leading Internet audience measurement service. The number of consumers accessing RealPlayer content increased by more than 700,000 active users from May to June, while usage of Windows Media content declined by more than 160,000 users in the same period. June marks the fifth consecutive month during which RealPlayer content has increased its lead over competing media formats -- a distinction it has held for as long as NetRatings has been publishing such data.

``Our latest figures show RealPlayer continuing its overall dominance as the most widely used streaming media player format,'' said T.S. Kelly, Director of Internet Media Strategies at NetRatings. ``With over 25 million US home users in June, RealPlayer files had more than twice as many users as the closest competitor.''

RealNetworks also announced the expanding popularity and continued growth in the Real.com(TM) Network of Web sites and media services:

-- Traffic to the Real.com Guide has grown by more than 78 percent among
home users in the first six months of 2000, according to NetRatings.
This growth is in stark contrast to the combined traffic to Microsoft
Windows Media Web sites, which according to NetRatings increased by
only 3 percent in the same period.
-- Real.com Network has driven an estimated 430 million visits to media
companies providing programming through the Real.com Network since its
introduction in November 1999.
-- According to NetRatings, 9 of the top 10 most requested streams on the
Internet in June were accessed through the Real.com Network.
