Vet, the lamb restrictions are quotas and not a all out ban. I have no idea why we are placing a quota on foreign meat and I frankly don't care. However, the quantities that already are permitted to enter the US seem pretty substantial and hardly a detriment to the health of the New Zealand Lamb industry.

I'm sure there are plenty of other markets they can seek out to make up the difference... :0)

In sum, trade issues are oftentimes VERY COMPLEX, and can be totally unrelated to the actual issue involved (such as the US placing punitive tariffs on French wine because they won't take our beef or bananas).

Since I don't know the specifics of the lamb quotas, and the fact that I don't eat lamb, it really does not concern me. However, the minute we see restrictions placed upon Jameson's Irish Whiskey, then you'll see me raising a stink... <VBG>

I think it is YOU who needs to be more objective and quite arguing the specific to the general. Overall, the US markets are FAR more free than most of those in the rest of the world. And much of that was because we understand that we risk losing markets for our goods if we close our own markets.

I think you need to relax a bit Vet... You may be right with regard to US policy towards the NZ lamb industry, but I certainly don't have all the facts necessary to judge that policy. (and I really don't plan on collecting them either).

Regards,

Ron
