Who remembers why Korea and Japan were in a hurry to get a 3G system up and running by 2002?

The news out of Japan is very interesting. If I recall, one of the items that helped Q tank into the low 50s was the announcement that Toshiba was dedicating a new fab to wcdma, and the concern that this would threaten qcom's ipr revenue stream. As of today, some of Q's essential patents have been upheld in Japan and Toshiba has signed up for a 3G contract, which covers all forms of cdma.

Dr. J is still batting 1000 in my books.
