Semtech Announces the SC1563 500mA Low Quiescent Linear Regulator; Very Low Quiescent Current and Dropout Voltage Ideal for Battery-Powered Applications

NEWBURY PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2000--Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC) a leader in semiconductor solutions for communications, interface, and power management, today announced availability of the SC1563 500mA linear regulator.

This device features the small packaging, low quiescent current and low dropout voltage necessary for portable, battery-powered products. Possible applications include notebook computers, DSP-based applications such as cell phones and personal digital assistants, and USB hubs and peripherals.

The SC1563 is designed to operate from a 2.2V to 5.5V input supply, making it ideal for applications with a single Lithium Ion (LiIon) battery. It is also suitable for notebook computer systems where step-down from the system 5V or 3.3V may be required. Fixed output voltage options include 1.8V, 2.5V, 2.8V, 3.0V, 3.1V and 3.3V, or the output can be adjusted using a simple resistor divider.

The SC1563 is designed to operate with ceramic capacitors; however, it is very tolerant of output capacitor ESR and therefore will also work with tantalum capacitors, providing flexibility in terms of size, cost and availability. Only 1uF of output capacitance is required for stable operation.

A small 5 lead SOT-23 package is offered for space-critical applications, while the MSOP-8 package option is available for higher power applications. Other features of the SC1563 include extremely low quiescent current (100uA) over the full load range, low dropout voltage (450mV typical at 500mA), short-circuit and over-temperature protection, and industrial temperature rating. A shutdown control is provided, with quiescent current less than 2uA in shutdown over temperature.

Pricing and Availability

Evaluation samples of the SC1563 in SOT-23-5 packaging are available now, with volume production scheduled for September 2000. Production packaging options will include both SOT-23-5 and MSOP-8 packaging. The SC1563 will be available through Semtech's network of direct sales representatives and distributors, and is priced at $0.71 in 1,000 unit quantities.
