INDEX.DAT ...

I have an INDEX.DAT file in both my cookies folder and my temporary internet files folder.

In my cookies folder, the INDEX.DAT is accompanied by the text cookies I've accepted. When I want to rid myself of all cookies, I delete this entire folder. I must boot to DOS to do this, because Windows defends itself against such activity.

In my temporary internet files folder, I have INDEX.DAT as the only file. It's 100K larger than the file with the same name in my cookies folder. Again, I can erase this file in DOS, but it's easier to use the tools option in IE to do the work.

The larger INDEX.DAT file found in the temporary internet files folder seems to act in a 'strange' way with Explorer. Explorer displays this single file as a directory tree with the oddly named sub-folders and a number of files. In DOS, they don't exist??? My conclusion is that the contents of INDEX.DAT is displayed as a directory tree even though no such tree resides on the disk. Similarly, REGEDIT displays registry data using the same (file) structure and icons.

Both these files and folders get re-created the next time I run IE after deleting them. I regularly delete mine as part of a maintenance routine. (I use IE 4.0, which may differ from later versions.)

Hope this clears any misunderstanding or ambiguities.

Cheers, PW.

mr.mark, you will see my reply to PMS Witch. this is confusing. Try using Explorer to search for index.dat. (Tools find) I will be interested in what you see. Do you have one in cookies and one in Content IE5? Yet when you look in IE5 no index.dat. Windows dos not even a folder. Am going to reboot now to dos and see. It does seem to be an illusion but why make it so complicated.
