Asbestos.

DDT? Remember Rachel Carsons and "Silent Spring"?

Thalidomide?

So many of these things remain controversial. Cigarettes. Breast implants. Nuclear power.

>>>I'm looking for a couple of examples of some form of technology that, at one time, everyone thought was the greatest thing since sliced bread.... and that ultimately turned out to have hideous repercussions for mankind...<<<

How about nose rings and tongue posts?

Machine guns?

Car alarms?

I'm terrible at this stuff; and I bet what you're looking for is a metaphor for the poop.

McCarthy?

How about MTBE which the EPA mandates to be used in gasoline in certain parts of the US? It doesn't break down and gets into water supplies rendering them unfit for consumption.

Croc,

When I think of clicking thru my umpteen dozen cable
channels searching for something to watch, it occurs
to me that TV may qualify for your "hideous repercussions
for mankind" criteria.

Ditto for Pop Music, at least what seems always to be
blaring in music stores these days.

Curmudgeonly yours,

Justin
