sditto: Thanks. Very insightful.

Seems like the key to Qualcomm's gorilladom is its entire CDMA based system. And the key to that is not chips but software at the three levels you have cited and what I have tried to call "know how".

And we know that both Motorola and Nokia have had problems with providing "chips" that work well enough to run the operators testing gauntlet. The question is why?

My understanding from reading engineer and Clark and others on the Q threads is that it was not the hardware but the associated software that tripped them up.

And there is an amazing (to me at least) amount of software imbedded in the chips themselves - an area where Qualcomm seems to excel. Then there is software needed to make a phone or appliance work well. And then there is software to make the entire operating system function.

As long as Qualcomm is able to frequently change (upgrade and improve) any one of these, it should be hard for anyone - even including powerhouses such as Intel and Texas Instruments to muscle in effectively - particularly at the high end.

INTC and TI can crank out great chips, but can they win the CDMA software race? That will be where the real battle will be fought, no?

Again, all this discussion is fascinating. Seems like the thread is zeroing in on the essence of Qualcomm's gorilla power.

Best.
