Average American's Retirement Plan Assets Up 20%
BUSINESS WIRE - July 18, 2000 09:41
GREENWICH, Conn., Jul 18, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- A new survey by PLANSPONSOR.com/Plan Sponsor Magazine, the nation's leading authorities on pension and retirement issues, shows that the assets of the average retirement plan participant increased to $39,966 this year from $32,885 a year ago, an increase of more than 21%.

The PLANSPONSOR.com survey polled 71 companies responsible for the recordkeeping of $2.13 trillion in 401 (k) assets for 53 million plan participants in nearly 268,000 retirement plans throughout the United States. These totals increased from $1.67 trillion in assets for 48 million plan participants in 1999.

"The average American participating in a 401 (k) plan saw a significant increase in savings this past year," said Charles Ruffel, CEO of PLANSPONSOR.com/Plan Sponsor Magazine and recognized authority on global retirement issues. "Americans are contributing more towards retirement and are benefiting from a healthy economy and a strong stock market, despite some recent setbacks."

As account balances grow, retirement investors are requiring greater access to investment education and overall advice. The poll showed that 79% of all providers offer some level of Internet-based retirement education. 42% of providers have moved to the next level in retirement planning-offering plan participants investment advice through the Web.

The survey also showed that the average assets per retirement plan totaled $7.9 million in 2000 and the average number of participants per plan was 199.
