I haven't read Francis' columns in years, either. I read him now because he usually has an essay in Chronicles, which I read every month. The man can sure turn a phrase. I think he is too strident on race issues, but he is an excellent polemicist. Hard to find a good polemicist since Murray Rothbard died. This month's essay is called "The Revolution Two-Step". In it, he reminds us that VI Lenin was fond of Beethoven and played chess. Doesn't hurt to get reminded that cultured men are often the most brutal.

Boycotting grapes was my first political act. I was only about 14, and didn't understand exactly why it wasn't cool to eat grapes, but I went along. The article says that schools will be required to spend part of the day teaching students about Chavez' legacy. I wonder if they'll point out that when he led the migrant farm workers on their march, it was under the banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Come to think of it, thats the last time a street action had any tangible results. Since the Left went secular, their street marches have not been anywhere near as successful.
