KROONDAL SHARES FALL AFTER FRIENDLY BID
Shares and options in South African platinum miner Kroondal fell as investors took profits after a friendly bid by Australia's Aquarius Platinum earlier in the week.
Kroondal shares were trading 6.15 percent lower at R15.25 rand, adrift of a year-high of R21 reached at the beginning of the week shortly before the two firms said they intended to merge to create a company worth Sterling 200 million.
The deal will be through Aquarius offering 100 of its shares from a newly listed subsidiary on the Johannesburg bourse for every 100 Kroondal shares.
Aquarius is expected to use strong cash flows from Kroondal to finance mine projects in South Africa, including the Marikana and Everest South projects to develop new platinum mines.
Kroondal shares will be delisted from the Johannesburg bourse on September 15 if the Aquarius offer is accepted. - Reuters

Miners' Strike Does Not Affect SouthernEra's Diamond Production

TORONTO, July 31 /CNW/ - Underground work on SouthernEra's Leopard
Fissure Project in South Africa has been temporarily halted by a legal strike
action commenced by the National Union of Mine Workers on July 26, 2000. The
strike action does not affect production at the Marsfontein Joint Venture
which uses non-union contractors. Plant operations and diamond recoveries
continue at planned levels.
The Leopard Fissure Project is an underground diamond prospect currently
the subject of a feasibility study. Underground development leading to
production is not expected to begin until late this year.
The Union's principal demand is higher pay. Mediation and arbitration
have so far failed to achieve a settlement. SouthernEra has indicated that it
is willing to consider improved compensation once a completed feasibility
study has confirmed project economics.
SouthernEra Resources Limited is a diamond mining and exploration company
and an emerging platinum group metals producer. The common shares of
SouthernEra are traded under the symbol SUF on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
