The question I would like to address here is that of why the price of RDRAM is still so high compared to SDRAM. Since Samsung is the leading producer of RDRAM, (with 80% of the 128/144Mbit size according to a recent press release), we can check for availability using a 144Mbit RDRAM chip availability: 34374 units from 5 suppliers:netcomponents.com (ignore capacitor matches) Samsung RIMM availability, various orgs: 37153 units from 22 suppliersnetcomponents.com netcomponents.com Assuming an average of 6 RDRAM chips per RIMM, the above accounts for around 250K RDRAM chips. This is a pretty healthy spot market, (maybe $5MM worth) and is not an indication of tight supplies. The vast majority of production, as has been noted many times, is sent directly to the buyer (such as Dell), and never shows up in the spot market. A market this size in RDRAM is not abnormally small. As an example, Samsung's most popular SDRAM is the 64Mbit part, and there are something like 600M of these available. At $7 each, this is something like $4.2MM of supply. Conclusion: RDRAM is not in short supply, but instead is simply priced high. On the other hand, DDR, despite being used in fairly large volumes in the Nvidia chip series, (as well as the new ATI Radeon board just reviewed by Tomshardware), is still in tight quantity and is hard to find. Hyundai is the largest maker, a search for their parts finds only the following: Hyundai DDR SDRAM, various orgs, availability: 1610 units, from 2 suppliers:netcomponents.com Note that the above parts are both the x16 part, which is the one used in the earlier Nvidia DDR graphics boards.netcomponents.com -- Carl Notes: (RTQ: $96.125) The 128MBit size SDRAM from Samsung is comparable to the above RDRAM chips, and is available in size and quantity a couple times larger than RDRAM, but is also produced in correspondingly higher volume and is priced lower: 128Mbit SDRAM chips, various orgs: 118975 units, 22 suppliers:netcomponents.com Pretty good quantity of EliteMT SDRAM chips for sale:netcomponents.com Some SDRAM DIMMs:netcomponents.com netcomponents.com
