Average power for IS-95 in cellular band was 2 mW across the whole cell site radius. 40% of the time it is less than 100 MICRO watts. Analog cellular is the worst one, which is 700 mwatts peak power with a very coarse 16 step power control. Max power for IS-95 is 200 mWatts, but then on the average it only transmits about 1/4 of the time, so by the same GSM measurement, it is like .5 mW average power or 50 mW peak power.

As the cell radius shrinks and we get closer to micro cells, CDMA automatically scales it self back by the built in power control to very small numbers. It is not uncommon for a user which is wihtin 100 meters of a cell site to be transmitting at 1 microwatt or less.

BTW - have any of you seen the late night infomercials on the new cellular "protector"? It claims to cut off all the harmful rays from your cell phone and stop the radiation towards your head. What it is comprised of is a little screen which goes over the EARPIECE to keep those little rays from coming out those little holes. And if you buy it now, they throw in a magic antenna wiht it. The magic antenna is a printed copper tape which goes under your battery and provides extra signal to your cellphone. (NOTE: it does not connect to anything, however...). Being a device Physics type guy, I laughed my head off at the stupidity of the thing. but then I bet they make a bundle off of people who don;t really understand how the phone works.

(Answers to the Physics questions above: 1) The antenna is what radiates, so you have to cover it to protect yourself. but by covering it, you loose the signal and your phone doesn;t work. Best to get the lowest power phone that works well. 2) Since the copper patterned tape does not connct to the antenna, it cannot help it, other than to provide a virtual ground field close to the phone. But since the shield would most likely block the rays, it would in the end block out signal more than it helps signal.....but what do I know, there is probably some magic moon dust in there somewhere which makes this all work..)
