Nice thread you started here. One company I haven't seen mentioned yet is Mercury Computer Systems. Though they are not yet recognized as a player in this space - it deserves scrutiny. Mercury has a tight relationship with Motorola. They use MOT chips to build embedded systems (GE Lightspeed, etc). Mercury is working on 3G base stations - although you wouldn't know it from their web site. They are keeping pretty quiet about it right now, but this is from their '99 Annual Report:

Our market research indicates that the digital wireless
market will need the next generation of base stations
to have greater bandwidth and signal processing
capability. The underlying technology to meet these
requirements is a natural extension of Mercury’s current
products. Additionally, the market opportunity
represents an OEM business model that Mercury
understands well. Part of our development investment
will be dedicated to this emerging market over the
next two years.

Has anyone generated a list of the public 3G player. I know of a few, MOT, QCOM, etc. I would appreciate some other names to look into. Thanks
