@home's contribution is Excite international portals + 13.5 million homes passed. Chello is providing 20.8 million homes passed. The real question is in who has the better quality of homes passed.

Yes and no. I believe that ATHM is contributing its interests in the various joint ventures to ExciteChello. Hence if ATHM owned say 35% of Japan@home (not sure what exactly the number is) and its 6 million footprint, then ExciteChello will succeed to such 35% interest of the JV. Thus Chello has is own footprint of I think 17 plus million (plus limited rights I think to another 7 or 8 million) plus minority ownership interests of JVs with 13.5 homes passed from Excite. One would think at some point the other partners in these JVs may be bought out, perhaps with the ipo proceeds.

On the other hand the Excite international portals are I believe either wholly owned by ATHM or majority owned and to date I believe represent the vast majority of international revenue of ATHM.

I think you and Ahhaha are correct in that Chello did this deal to get access "to the experience and knowledge of creating and operating a BB network." I have read about Chello having service problems to the point where some articles questioned whether their network can deliver services as promised.
