Joe, RE: While that is true, the task of creating such an OS will be simplified by the fact that the source code will be there and a 64 bit extension of existing 32bit compilers will be something a few interns can do, compared to the Merced compiler, that probably matches complexity of Apollo landing on the Moon.

Joe

All very true, these things can be done, but will there be enough motivation to do them?

Getting OS Developers to write for extended 32 is no guarantee. AMD will be targeting Sledgehammer for Business users, and applications, a market that they they are not currently a player in. Intel has poured millions, if not billions, into IA-64 support and developement, can AMD do likewise? Can they convince MicroSoft and/or Red Hat etc. to do likewise?

Maybe so...... Maybe not.....
