Mark,
<<What could they possibly offer institutions that could make up for the $20+ per share screw?>>
The only thing that I can think of is--short-term profits. This sector is so hated and mistrusted at this point--in part due, at least allegedly--to Seagate's own actions, that many institutions just don't want any part of it. They would rather buy EMC, NTAP, JDSU, even VRTS, with nose bleed PSRs than DD companies.

However, it looks like there may be another little shakeout of high PSR stocks. Things don't look especially good, with stocks selling off even after good reports. Now ML comes out and suggests that maybe there is a peak in the semi cycle, a la SSB a couple of weeks ago. Guess they want another buying opp, like SSB created at the beginning of the month. Allegedly, SSB was buying after their analyst tanked the stocks then.

Next month, the CPI should be very friendly, along with the PPI. Those will be important numbers, since the August Fed meeting will probably be the last in which they would raise rates before the election, barring really disastrous news which is unlikely. I would look for a very strong August after the coming swoon.
