We knew-- and thriftily made use of-- everybody's middle name. We knew who was buried where. we all mattered, and the dead most of all. Shirley AbbottWomenfolks:Growing Up Down South Your search backwards into your roots makes me slightly envious. It sounds- hmm- grounding? (oo- Sort of a pun! Ground, roots) Peaceful and reassuring somehow. A nice antidote for the rushed pace of our present, the past is fixed and we can examine it leisurely and with confidence that it won't slide out from under us. Last Spring, Dan's mother's family had a reunion. We didn;t go and Terry (mom-n-law) wasn't terribly excited about it, although she was one of the organizers (she always is, by default- sometimes I'm glad I have a reputation for disorganization) but she came home having had a wonderful time and with lots of information, and she LIKED the people she got to know better. There are always a couple in the family (like you?) who have the interest and time to delve into the past, gather all the photos and organize, and that is what seems to make it meaningful - being able to see yourself as part of a continuity, adding to some master family plan. They are having their next reunion in Rockbridge County, Va, my home, although they are mostly from the MidWest, because it seems some of the ancestors originally settled there--- a family name McKemy. Well, I grew up with lots of Rockbridge McKemy's, it's a big county name. It's funny that Dan's and my pasts overlapped long before we ever met. He knows so much about his family- they can trace way back to the Mayflower on his mother's side, and his father comes from Clevelands (Grover) and Eddys (Mary Baker), where I know nothing about either side of my family, and now they are all mostly dead. When is the reunion? How many are expected? I bet you have a wonderful time.
