Ray, Silly silly me, thanks for pointing out the fact that we're actually talking about the upstream in HFC. I lost my footing there for a minute, probably due to my pre-oc with FTTH and PONs. Although, the latter of the two also imposes an asymmetrical transaction profile.

I also lost sight of the fact that during an "exchange" of DVDs, one of the parties actually has to be doing the "sending" (which, in the case of the HFC or DSL upstream, is an long and arduous feat, at best, when sending gigabyte-sized files).

The traffic management protocols I mentioned, however, "will" be invoked on residential networks at some point, nonetheless, in order to effect QoS and provide the underpinning for VPNs to work-at-homes in support of SLAs. Some of the national DSLs do this now.
