I think our disagreement all boils down to one statement you made:

Correct. I don't want ATHM to be part of any team.

IMHO, you are living in denial.
ATT will shortly have 74% of the voting rights in ATHM.
You have to face it - ATHM is part of the ATT team.
ATT has been calling the shots for months.

You think ATHM is some kind of independent business and I think it is owned by ATT.

If I am right, ExciteChello makes perfect sense.

Statements like:
So who is in charge? ATHM? Att?
make no sense if you recognize that ATT has all the voting rights.

this conglomeration will force AOL, MSFT, or X, to accelerate their efforts to field a capable opponent.
MSFT is on our side. They bought into the European deal. They have a stake in ATT, UPCOY and Telequst. That's part of the reason it took so long to get this thing done (had to wait for the EU to decide on MSFT deal). MSFT just wants to have it's software used. Being partners with ATT is exactly what they want.

*************
IMHO, What is happening is that ATT is consolidating its broadband services outside the USA. They feel the easy way to do it is to form a new company and then later IPO the company. My guess is that having ATHM buy Chello would cause a lot of time delay and regulatory problems that will not be encountered if they are just starting a new company.

A corporation must have a definition, a mission and purpose.

ATHM's stated mission has been to be the leader in broadband. They are. So far that hasn't meant much. Maybe it will in the future.
