I promised to get back to this, and the nightmare of SI malfunction seems to have abated......

Radicalization is a process of deciding that something is fundamentally wrong with society, and that it can be addressed politically. I suppose I became radicalized, as did many others, by disillusionment with the Vietnam War. It is no small thing to think that your government is waging a futile war that is wreaking destruction upon a small country, and getting your peers killed in combat. Of course, a precursor was the civil rights movement, and the sense of pervasive evil that it revealed, as people were murdered with impunity, and officers of the peace set dogs upon peaceful protesters.

To be deradicalized is to regain your trust in the fundamental institutions of the country, and the soundness of society, and/or to understand that politics is limited in what it can accomplish. One of the reasons that I am so prone to argue with libertarians is that I despise the radicalism of the Right just as much as the radicalism of the Left. I actually believe in America, in its people and in its destiny, just as Reagan did. Reagan spoke for me, for the way I see things, in a way that no one else has quite since...........
