Q1 results can't lift DMIC
--10:01 am - By Michael Baron
Digital Microwave (DMIC: news, msgs) is off 11 5/8, or 27.8
percent, to 30 1/4 in early trading. The San Jose, Calif.,
provider of broadband wireless access products reported
first-quarter earnings of $9 million, or 12 cents a share, up
from last year's profit of $160,000, and ahead of First
Call's average estimate of 10 cents a share. Sales rose 33
percent in the latest three months to $86.7 million from $66
million in the same period a year earlier. Digital Microwave
said it received new orders of $126 million in the June
quarter, compared to orders of $67.8 million in last year's
equivalent period. Digital Microwave attributed the strong
results to rising demand for its Altium high-capacity
broadband wireless product. Shipments of Altium rose 30
percent on a sequential basis to $24 million. The source of
the weakness in the stock Wednesday morning could be
the company's acknowledgment that "industry-wide component
shortages have presented short-term challenges to certain
product lines." But Digital Microwave goes on to say
that it continues to "ramp capacity to meet customer demand
with increasing profitablility."
