OT- Ban Spam?

Frank- Ban spam? Yes! A idea whose time has come. Community messages boards, such as SI are so popular and it's disruptive to have spam inserted into conversations. No one would be able to barge into a verbal conversation among a group of friends, and spam it. So why should they be able to in a cyberspace. Luckily spam is so rare on SI. But on message boards, namely Yahoo, it makes reading the boards almost unbearable(among other reasons)<g>. -MikeM(From Florida)

Hi Frank,

Re:The Senate will be pressed for time to take action on anti-spam legislation before the 106th Congress draws to a close for fall elections.

Let me make a prediction, this anti-spam bill will die in committee in the Senate at the end of the session. Remember all the brouhaha about the Contract On America in the '95 session? The House working late into the evening several sessions to pass a basket of new legislation, changing the course of American democracy forever. Not one of those bills ever got out of committee in the Senate.

My take on HR 3113? It's an unlucky number and unlikely to ever be seen inside the Beltway as more that mere grandstanding.

Frank, at the Baltimore OFC, couple of engineers told me that every one will keep on "fooling around" with components until competitive pressures force them to put in soliton technology and abandon pump lasers, etc.
i don't know how close such as algety, qtera and corvis are to scalable product. it may not be foot-dragging but rather an art that has not reached the proper state.
but do you, or any thread members, have any take on solitons vs. pump lasers etc. maybe the bottom line is: solitons are still too complex, and we'll be pumping away for some time to come.
