I know, I have been very frustrated too. Assuming this one makes it through: I am saying that it is easier to function if you think that your actions mean something in the cosmic order, that you are doing what you are supposed to be, and that that applies to the pursuit of truth as well. But how can anything matter in a universe devoid of purpose or value? It is all very well to say that we construct our own purposes, but all that means is that we are whistling past the graveyard. It is still a "tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". And I am saying that it doesn't matter what sort of truth we are talking about: scientific, mathematical, historical, or otherwise. The belief that one is doing something of inherent, not merely imputed value, is a bulwark against fatigue and carelessness.
