The first phase of cdma2000, referred to as 1XRTT, is designed to provide high-speed packet data transmission at speeds up to 144 kbps. It enables 'always on' Internet access from mobile phones and handheld computers, with costs incurred only when data is transferred. ``With ten times the speed of current, circuit switched technology, cdma2000 will make fast wireless access to Internet applications a reality,'' said Telstra OnAir, managing director, products, Rick Wakeham. ``We view Wireless Internet as the catalyst for a new explosion in the on- line economy, driving the second wave of Internet and eBusiness,'' said Peter MacKinnon, vice-president, Wireless Internet Strategic Portfolio Marketing, Nortel Networks. ``Deployment of cdma2000 1XRTT will enable subscribers to download images from the web almost three times faster than with present terrestrial modems,'' MacKinnon said. ``This demo illustrates Nortel Networks' global leadership in redefining mobility by enabling high-speed access anytime, anywhere, and by allowing users and mobile professionals to be more productive on the go.'' ``The Telstra CDMA Freedom(TM) network provides the largest coverage area of any mobile cellular network in Australia,'' Wakeham said. ``It is particularly suited to our demanding environment, making it the network of choice for customers living or traveling outside metropolitan areas.'' The demonstration included web browsing, m-Commerce (mobile commerce), and live and streaming video. Telstra's on going trial will include verification of 1XRTT coverage, capacity and high-speed data performance under a range of user environments, including rural Australia. Based on Nortel Networks' CDMA Metro Cell base stations, the trial is also expected to demonstrate smooth evolution from existing Nortel Networks' radio infrastructure to higher bandwidth next generation networks. ``Our relationship with Nortel Networks on the CDMA project has been extremely close and very productive,'' Wakeham said. ``The two companies recently made the first cdma2000 1XRTT packet data call on a live 800 MHz CDMA network. Today's announcement marks another very significant and important milestone in our trials of 1XRTT.'' Telstra is Australia's largest telecommunications and information services company.
