Remembering your earlier posts on parallel processing, do multiple processors speed up server type functions as they can for certain graphics functioins?

In general, multiprocessor machines are very good fits for server type functions. By definition, servers are handling multiple different client requests and these clients are often independent of each other. Hence client requests can run on different processors in the same machine simultaneously and you see good speedup.

In fact, multiprocessors on the PC side have nearly all been aimed at server type environments rather than being general purpose desktop machines.

Of course, there are always other considerations - e.g. if all your server is doing is being a disk server, then it's more important that you have a fast RAID system on your server than whether or not you have multiple processors.

However, I will say this. My suspicion is that is that the new "5-quadrant" :-) matrix is not really the Cube being slotted in between the pro and the consumer, but rather the pro being reassigned (eventually) to the high end server market and the Cube becoming the standard pro desktop.

The multiprocessor G4s will be marketed more towards server type environments (particularly with Gigabit Ethernet) while ordinary professionals will be expected to buy cubes to put on their desks.
