Forms Licensing Agreement With Mitsubishi Motors Japan CALGARY, July 19 /CNW/ - Following the outstanding emissions reductions achieved by Mitsubishi Automotive Techno-Service Co. Ltd (``MATS'') using the Alternative Fuel Systems Inc. (`AFS') Eagle Dual Fuel System, MATS and its partners have signed an agreement with AFS for the licensing of the AFS Eagle system. MATS, a Division of Mitsubishi Motors Japan, will work with AFS, Nippon Ecology Work System Corp., Ene-serve, and Obayashi-gumi in the development and application of a Mitsubishi/AFS version of the Mitsubishi 8DC9T stationary generator (``gen-set''). Earlier this year, the Eagle was used with this Mitsubishi variable geometry turbocharged gen-set to significantly reduce the oxides of nitrogen (``NOx'') emissions. This Mitsubishi/AFS system was the first of its kind to achieve these outstanding emission reductions and pass Japan's new restrictive Genset emission standards. Field trials of this new gen-set will be launched soon in a highly controlled emissions environment requiring ultralow NOx. In this project AFS will be working closely with MATS to develop a manufacturing-ready version of the Mitsubishi/AFS gen-set system. The finalized Mitsubishi/AFS low NOx gen-set will be manufactured and distributed worldwide by Mitsubishi. Ene-serve and Obayashi-gumi will be involved in the application of these systems and AFS will continue to receive royalties for all Mitsubishi/AFS gen-sets sold around the world. The AFS Eagle system utilizes a combination of diesel and compressed natural gas to dramatically reduce NOx without injecting ammonia or other hazardous chemicals. The Eagle provides for the sequential, multipoint delivery of natural gas to the 8 cylinder, 16 litre Mitsubishi 8DC9-T engine through high-speed solenoid injectors. The microprocessor controlled AFS electronic diesel governor system, with its unique control algorithms, provides accurate control of the diesel pilot oil to provide ignition for the natural gas - air mixture. Through application of AFS' patented cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and variable geometry turbo charger, NOx was reduced 92% from diesel operation levels. Given the significant use of gen-sets around the world and global concerns about harmful diesel emissions, MATS anticipates a large worldwide demand for these systems. In Japan where there is a strong market for gen-sets, that Country's new ultralow NOx emissions restrictions will soon prohibit the use of higher polluting types of generators. Other restrictive emission requirements for gen-sets are being put in place around the world, particularly in the United States. AFS President John C. Anderson reported that he was very proud to announce the Mitsubishi gen-set project, AFS' second major OEM agreement in less than 12 months, and said ``I am thrilled to be working with such notable companies on this project and delighted to have a part in this important worldwide market. This project helps to fulfill my promise to continue to expand the application of AFS' outstanding emission reduction technologies while continuing to increase our strategic alliances. Given the highly stringent emissions guidelines in Japan, AFS is again proving itself capable of handling even the world's toughest pollution reduction challenges in real world applications.'' Alternative Fuel Systems Inc (`AFS'), based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is a world leader in innovative natural gas and emission reduction systems and components. It is publicly traded on the CDNX as `ATF'. -0- 07/19/2000 For further information: Ms. Paula Kinch, Director, Investor Relations, TEL: (403) 262-1833, FAX: (403) 237-7441, EMAIL: AFS@AFSGlobal.com; WEBSITE: www.AFSGlobal.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Release sent courtesy of Canada NewsWire Portfolio Email.
