The selection process acts upon individuals, but the aggregate effect is on the species as a whole, and even on other species in the environment. In many cases the individuals who have survived a selection process will in turn compete or mate with members of the same species which have survived a different selection process. The net result over time is generally a bigger toolbox of genes in which to go through the next generation of selection.
