I read an article in a bus rag recently saying that part of Japan's antiquated business values are that in Japan, companies are valued largely on how much land they own, and not their book value or future growth prospects.

So companies will buy and never sell land, and thus there are vacant lots in Tokyo held by corporations just to show it on their books. Meanwhile, there is nowhere for people to live.
