Thats about the only net benifit I can think of that still works. People used to do this to try and sell a stock they own without paying a capital gain, but the IRS now considers short sales of the same security that you own to be the equivilent of a sale for tax purposes. I suppose someone could try to do it anyone with postitions in different accounts but if you don't claim the capital gain and get audited the IRS will nail you to the wall.
