as if the variations were responsive to environmental pressures, rather than random.
You still miss the very basic concept of natural selection. The variations may be random, but the individuals which survive with a trait are not. The fact that they survive makes it more likely that they will have offspring who share the trait, while those without are more likely to not have offspring.
