UF,

<< Doesn't the good doctor refer to it as 3G? >>

He sure does.

Too bad the rest of the world does not.

The reason he calls it 3g is because NTT wcdma that is scheduled to roll out is suppose to achieve the same data rates when used in optimal conditions. They (NTT) are calling it 3g and hence qcom calls 1x 3g.The US looks at it and says well if that is 3G so is 1X.

The standard bodies look at NTT roll out as a path to 3G which has clearly identified specs, where CDMA2000 3MC is still not finalized as far as specs go so they consider it as 2.5G.

The weird part of all of this is WCDMA in its ultimate format achieves the same DATA rates as HDR but has more multimedia capacities(eric correct me if I am wrong).I am curious to see CDMA2000 3g specs once they are available.I am willing to bet the achievable rates might blow the door off wcdma.
