From the top of my head, I think dogs have been domesticated for between 12 and 25 thousand years. That certainly makes it one of the earliest traits of civilization. Humans spread through the world 100,000 years ago and the Cro-Magna as early as 3 million years ago. Most opinions I read conclude that language skills were the dominate factor in homo's wide travels.

TP - I have two dogs, but somehow they seem to hinder my travels (have to sneak them into motel-6)
