JDS, SDL join the big boys

JDS Uniphase (JDSU: news, msgs) is flying 21, or 20 percent higher, to 127 3/4 in pre-market trading. Standard & Poor's announced after Wednesday’s close that the maker of components for the fiberoptic communications market will be added to its benchmark S&P 500 index ($SPX: news, msgs) after the close of trading on July 26. The company will replace Rite Aid (RAD: news, msgs) which is being booted for lack of representation. Rite Aid is trimming 3/16 from its NYSE close to 5 in Instinet. SDL Inc. (SDLI: news, msgs) is rocketing 64 3/8, or 18 percent higher, to 424. On July 10, JDS agreed to acquire the company in a $41 billion stock deal.

HEADLINE STOCKS - Issues to watch on July 20
NEW YORK, July 20 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks to watch on Thursday:
- International Business Machines Corp. on Wednesday reported a 1 percent revenue decline, redeemed by earnings that beat estimates and comments by the world's No. 1 computer maker that it was on the brink of climbing out of a year-long sales rut. Its stock closed at 103-1/2.

- Standard & Poor's said Wednesday it will replace drug store chain Rite Aid Corp. in the S&P 500 Index with fiber optic company JDS Uniphase Corp after the close of trading on Wednesday, July 26. Rite Aid closed at 5-3/16 while JDS closed at 106-3/4.

- German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom AG is in talks to acquire U.S. wireless telephone company VoiceStream Wireless Corp. in a deal valued at $53 billion or $205.60 a share, a source familiar with the situation said. VoiceStream closed at 145-1/2.

- Lucent Technologies Inc. posted third quarter earnings of 29 cents a share and said it plans to spin off its microelectronics business. The stock closed at 64-11/16.
