Curtis, once again, a spot-on, concise response from one whom i believe now to be a scientist or engineer. i respect the care with which you measure lucent's product. so angry am i at lucent's misleading p/r vaporware blitz, tricky accounting and lack of leadership, that i cannot imagine their fiber able to compete with glw's nor their OC-192 capability to compare with nt's. but that is the broad brush stroke of the layman i am.

Curtis, it seem to me that soliton technology - 3000 miles without regeneration - will make pump lasers - and thus, many of today's components - unnecessary. at the Baltimore OFC, some engineers told me nobody wants to push the state of the art beyond current market demands, so they'll keep "fooling around" with components until competitive pressures make solitons the next big thing. even if this is true, no one can know how long they can stretch the components game - if that's what it is. e.g., the foot-dragging on hdtv. do you have any take on solitons vs. pump lasers, etc.?
