First, the customers will pay the charge and given the momentum in the economy, there will be little or no slowing effect on packages shipped. If this really happens, then we I think the psychology of inflation will have got a small toe-hold. I.e., it is my speculation but, I think reasonable to conclude that UPS customers will say to themselves, "Well, fuel is going up and I gotta pay more. Now, who can hit up to make up for the increase?"

If that happens, then rising energy costs will not just be a defacto tax on income--it will have begun to spread through the system as in a zero-sum game.
