LOL! Cost big.. That's putting it mildly.. It will break the cam and put the valves though the tops of a few pistons to boot.

Thanks. If I recall correctly, I have already had the timing belt replaced -- but I will double check. I may be confusing it with the rubber timing belt in my BMW or the one in my daughter's Camry. I had not considered that as a possible cause of the lifter noise though.

Replacing the rubber timing belt is something I got in the habit of doing several years ago with my 525. It now has around 250K miles and still runs like it was new. It gets a new timing belt every couple of years or so (40-50K miles) whether it needs it or not, just in case. Very cheap insurance compared to the potential damage.
