USB modems just beginning to appear on DSL side, though vast majority (>95%) of DSL CPE shipped so far is 10Base-T ethernet and requires NIC (and opening the box).

On the cable side, don't know if anybody is shipping USB yet. Generally, you are correct USB hookup saves time and effort on part of both provider and customer.
