mitochondrial DNA sequences fell into four major groups.
It is still possible that male wolf puppies were put in with litters of dog puppies to grow up as guardian (as opposed to shepard or other working) dogs. Or just that male wolves occasionally got frisky with the family pet in heat. That would not appear in mitochondrial sequences.

Coyotes are still able to breed with dogs and wolves. I remember a male beagle we had mating with a coyote according to local hunters who observed them in the brush.
