Surprises on the conference call: Atmel is actually BENEFITTING from the trend in the European phones, which has hurt Motorola. These euro-phones often come with pre-paid phone cards and readers--which utilize Atmel smart card chips. As well, there is still a lot of flash in these phones. The net result is apparently more sales for Atmel, i.e., more smart card chips and more flash, net. They also do benefit from the high-end phones as well, since the data features require more flash (my earlier point).

Also, the prices on new bookings for some chips are GOING UP. This bodes very very well. I heard the words "cash cow"...I believe this is where Atmel overlaps with Microchip (MCHP)--I noticed the after-hours ask for MCHP has gone up to 74 from 71 during the Atmel conference call.

As well, they have had some positive reaction from customers who want to make lucrative, long-term agreements for flash (cash up front?)

Sounds like a great picture for the future.
