Dear Cheryl: Talked of TESTING,TESTING TESTING ULTRA SPARK III, coming out this year ( I didnt hear the date) dont expect any problems.
Backlog has grown 600 million year over year
hired 6,700 people, expect to hire even more in 2001
Product Sales growth 52% Service sales growth 50% higher product sales this year leads to higher service sales next year
Gross margin 52.1% same as 4th qtr 1999 and .1 below 3rd qtr.
STUNNING market share gain over IBM and HP.
RAISING growth expectations for 2001 from 25% to 30%

Clear why great numbers... Stayed focused and executed. Sun is network platform of choice for service providers

talked about all the competition actions... "Sun dot net platform is shipping"(addressing MS dot.net marketing)..

Storage business... growth rate... Zander... best booking qtr in storage for some time. Very excited in what seeing in storage...

Currencies. +39%yr over year... Europe... with weak dollar could be +49%

Lead times/backlog rates. Trying to build buffer in to supply lines. Bit higher but working hard to bring down. Internal initiative to have better forecasting

Ultrasparc III... Programs in place to work on solaris 8.. Challenge is making sure everything checks out..testing. Not hardware problem. Feels no different that other transitions.

Revenue growth..42 % unix servers..compare to other companies numbers which are vague.

Storage.. Branch out..every account is heterogeneous.. Sun is asked to attach to HP, EMC etc.. As they try and manage these accounts will try and get rid of other players. Selling NAS and SAN to same account as others ...leading with "SUN" to get accounts.. rather than leading with servers... selling vertically integrated products... McNealy..storage is not an industry..it's a feature.. Laughs all around..

Ibm competition... Ariba and others saying IBM is growing in importance to them...etc.. McNealy.."the answer is in the numbers"... gaining market shares...

Backlog..gradual decline..nothing dramatic

Ultrasparc III... Some beta units out.. Not shipping. Will be hearing more about III this quarter.

What inning are we in Bricks and clicks world... Web tone switch business is biggest of all time... Everything will be connected..talking back to servers.. Sun servers... % of structured business on web servers..maybe 20%. Much room for growth.. E commeres space.. Market Maker important product.. Companies going to auction/spot market prices... haven't even had the first out in top of first inning..

Size of services infrastructure.. Leading with services organization.. Old take, that Sun is not on top of services..not an issue for last 1.5-2 years.

Any validity to selling old product over Ultrasparc III...answer is no

Thoughts on role of Linux... Linux is another unix. We have solaris..have put linux extensions.. A number of Sun products run on Linux.... Sun has 64 way.."linux".. solaris is in good shape..working with Linux community... very receptive to open source of star office to linux community

Acceleration in booking..change in applications running on webtone servers? Big growth is with service providers...300 plus in Suntone... fortune 500 cos all adding clickster web site to bricks.. Get instantaneous ROI to go online with stuff...

IBM was leader..Sun has grabbed leadership position... customers are buying solutions... Don't see anything IBM HP can throw at them...Sun has added solid value.. With out running around desperately... doing good solid business... not throwing around lots of deals as rumored etc

Sun has always bet on bandwidth... Bandwidth is accelerating.. Sun is being put at back-end of bandwidth of devices connected to internet...

Midrange from IBM... low end from hp..comment...... It isn't just a product play..go back to the numbers... Companies not as worried about delivering just a web page.. Worried about the whole solution. Customers aren't gonna jump by one TCP number.

Sun is on short list everywhere..because the don't lock in customers..they appreciate that.. They want to know who to call when webtone goes down. Spend majority of time developing delivering scalable, available, webtone servers.. Sun has better more compelling story.

Co-ownership arrangement of Iplanet going to work long term? Not even half way through arrangement.. Working fantastically.. Growing number of people in organization.. Grown the Iplanet business..rock solid..one of great partnerships in the business.

What to do to get Sun brand even better known... Scott is actually cutting back on his time on this. Two things driving brand... the numbers they are putting on board..shareholders are bragging about us (Scott mentioned us here...lol).. Effective advertising.. Everyone else is talking about Sun too..IBM, Hp, EMC..etc.. That helps... Still working on keeping branding going... still on the road a bit..spending more time with customers.
