Ah, the attractions of fame... remember just a few short years ago, when Dr. Greenspan was unknown except to Wall Street and a handful of retail investors? Yet, look at him now as he strides confidently into the Senate building, surrounded by his phalanx of bodyguards. He practices supressing his smile in the mirror in the morning. "Does this expression seem sufficiently insouciant, Andrea?" "Yes, but be sure not to display insouciance through your eyes as well, it causes wrinkles..."

Andrea Mitchell has, of course, been "on top of the situation at the Federal Reserve" for years. And she is old enough to remember that a real bear market just isn't good television. Who likes to watch their net worth be ground to dust, slowly but steadily? Next thing you know, Americans would eschew their gas guzzlers and drive around horrid little tin-cans again, or worse, ride the Metro. And where would that get us?
