with only the ham hand of selection as editor,
I think you underestimate the power of a selection. It's basicily a euphamism for death. All organisms are tested multiple times, those that that don't pass are out of the game forever, those that pass have their characteristics multiplied. Even a slight advantage is multiplied quickly.

I would think that designed organisms would not be so much alike. Why would a dolphin not be designed with gills if it spends so much time in the ocean. Why don't ground birds have 4 legs? why don't any animals have 3 legs or 5? Why not design a wheel into a creature? Why should my back be so poorly arranged to support my expanding waisteline? A designer should be able to come up with any arrangement, while an evolved animal has to work with the parts available in the parent.
