the advantage over all is with creatures that multiply quickly.
Competition between and among species is more like a chess game than a relay-race. There are different "strategies" that work well in different situations. You should see the movie "Searching for Bobby Fisher". In the final scene unusual strategies are used to great advantage. Quick reproduction leads to shortages quickly, It is only a real advantage if the creature is trying to overwhelm a preditor by sheer numbers, or is frequently presented with an unoccupied niche, such as the recently burned area in a forest.

If creatures were well designed they wouldn't be going extinct all the time.
