PHONE.COM IMPRESSES WITH RESULTS "Mobile technology firm Phone.Com (PHCM, $100, up $12) posted a smaller-than-expected 4Q loss of 10 cents, trouncing Wall Street's expectations of a 19-cent loss. Revenue more than quadrupled to $29 million from $7 million a year ago. Phone.com sells software that helps connect wireless phones to the Internet. COMMENT: This was a strong quarter for Phone.com, a member of our Wireless Portfolio. The company put up terrific numbers and narrowed its losses. Customer numbers doubled from 2 million to 4 million, a sign of the exploding demand for wireless Internet services. We expect this trend to continue, especially as more high-powered Internet-ready phones are introduced into the market. There are currently fewer than 500,000 wireless Net subscribers in the U.S., but this number is expected to increase fivefold by the end of this year alone. Phone.com is well positioned to profit from this new wireless world and we continue to accumulate the stock."
