Hey Gary,

It ain't just hot in Texas. WOW!!

Ya'll go ahead 'n laugh at that joke, but I'll tell ya the truth. The heat makes people MEAN!!!

Don't come to the South in the summertime- more crime 'cause people got shorter fuses. These rednecks just as soon blow yore head off if ya so much as look at 'em sideways...

I know what I'm talkin' about. I cain't hardly stand myself now :o)

Fishy:

Your "Welcome to Texas" hit me where I live. We are in Alpine, CA--about 35 miles from San Diego and 2,000 feet higher. Everything said about Texas applies to Alpine--at least in my wife's view.

Funny! Funny! Funny!

Thanks,

Good Texas piece. I've actually seen some of these things happen here in Houston.

LOL, Pisc...TX life...

These things are great...similar one "the Snow Story" about recent transferees to Minn ... I posted here a long time ago ... mighty profane ...

I have owned three residences in Austin (serially). First house built 1971. After a few years of having A/C maint contracts which they'd put freon in every spring (they all claim your unit's have "freon leaks," in 1986, in July, of course, A/C started blowing hot air. On a SATURDAY. Yellow Pages. Three A/C companies. Swamped. Is it emergency? If yes, rates are double. Okay, I'll pay it. Come on out.

Some of these A/C repair guys must receive extensive employee training in sales. Whole time they're there, pitching you on benefits of brand-new complete central HVAC system. How much more efficient they are these days ... you'll save so much on electric bills ... yes, that's true, if you're planning to live to be 108 years old you might finally break even on the cost of the new system.

They ALL say you're lucky to get 10 years out of ANY A/C system here. The 'honest' ones (few and far between), however, say "run 'em til they break." Which is what I do on any appliance, etc.

In that instance, replaced outside unit only. Worked for one year; July '87, 107 degrees, will never forget. Blowing hot air again. This time, indoor central had to go. Credited cost of year-old outdoor unit. Still, total cost $3500. Had to sleep on chaise lounge on the patio two nights. Seriously -- no exaggeration.

Sold that one in '91. Bot condo. Built in 1981. In 1992, A/C started blowing hot air. Same exercise. You gotta freon leak. Two years, added freon same as before (that's around 130 bucks per). 1995, had to replace outdoor unit. Cost: $2000. 1996 sold the place. New owner will be stuck with indoor unit replacement.

Current situation: house built 1981. BIGGER UNIT. MORE BTUs. 19 years old. So far, so good. No freon needed.

This time, I'll get a hotel room. Every spring I start bracing myself for that inevitable July day when it will be necessary to write a check for -- this time, I'm guessing $5K+, as it's a bigger unit.

Something very curious: this unit is in the ATTIC over the garage. Never heard of this -- putting the things in the attic. They do this anywhere else in the country?

Those are my r/l A/C in TX stories ...

hahahahahahahahahahahaha

It is some consolation when we have an 85-degree sunny day in January. LOL. I derive devilish delight from informing my friends back home up north -- where it is 100% impossible for that to happen -- of the weather conditions here.
