Samsung ups revenue forecast; chip sales reach $5.3 billion in first half

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. today announced companywide sales increased 37% to $14.75 billion (16.4 trillion won) compared to revenues in the same period last year. The Korean electronics giant also said its net earnings were 137% higher than the first half of 1999, reaching a record $2.87 billion (3.2 trillion won) in the first six months of 2000.

Samsung predicted that it will now post record profits in 2000, and it has raised its overall sales forecast to $28.77 billion for this year.

In the first half of 2000, semiconductors accounted for 36% of Samsung's sales, or about $5.3 billion. Digital media systems and home appliances were 39% of the company's revenues with information and communication products accounting for 25% of its business in the first half.
