CharlyMane - Religion is a civilizing factor? It may have been a unifying factor for many cultures, but it certainly didn't civilize them!

Just the opposite, in fact. It slowed the development of society by being a conservative force that was hostile to change.

In the spirit of Solon's postings, I suggest that people change religions every few years to get a feel for the other religion's bigotry and incivility.

Alternatively, we could just elect a new god for fixed four-year terms. Then we wouldn't have to worry about replacing her with something better whenever our society gains a bit of civility. Personally, I'd vote for a libertarian!

I would say that religion has been a plus for mankind. Its been a civilizing factor.

I think you are saying that it has been a plus for mankind because it has been a civilizing factor. What makes you think it has been a civilizing factor? I've just taken a brief look at mankind's wars and disputes from long before Christianity until the present. I've compared the violence and hurt that the world has endured through religious factors, to the world as it would have been without that influence. Understand the difference: I'm not looking at what the world MIGHT have been like without religion. That I can only surmise. I AM looking at the way the world WAS and IS like with religion. And all I see are dead bodies and oceans of spilled blood. The comment you made is a popular one from people that would rather not grapple with the Truth and yet are afraid to swim too far from the mainland. Now what makes you say that religion has been a civilizing factor?? War, terrorism, slaughter, hatred, racism and exclusion are civilizing factors? You couldn't even convince Lawrence's dead fish in Paris of that...
