There is no evidence whatsoever for a "faith gene," nor is one needed.
I think there is evidence for a "curiosity" gene. This leads people to find explanations for all sorts of things, and in the absence of enough information they will still come to the best conclusion they can muster. Magic is a good grab bag for all those things don't make sense with the information at hand.
