I suppose you think they should have sent in Jimmy Carter to talk them out. That would have been the ideal thing to do. With a slight variation: Send JC to negotiate. THEN, send the INS to collect Elian while this was going on. Just like the Israelis did with Idi Amin Dada. Different set of characters, same script. Hmmm... I just noticed that the initials JC are the same for Jimmy Carter as for... ah never mind. Actually, having Jimmy Carter go in would have been a pretty good idea, (if he would have been willing). He's an impressive peacemaker, and because of his stature I bet it would have worked out well. He's certainly gone into much more dangerous situations in the past. My initial thought was to ask a local respected priest from the area to walk up to the home (in broad daylight), with an INS agent and present the court order. Provided of course they would have waited long enough to obtain one.
