(OT) It's not my intention to litter the thread with techsupport stuff, but since I've had a couple of responses and others may have similar problems, I'll post here instead of PMing.

I've done a whole bunch of testing and it is the SanDisk card that is giving me grief.

I recognize that my reader isn't fancy, and could be considered dubious, even:

datafab.com

But it works just fine for my other cards ("IBM," "Nikon"). I can stick them in the reader and response and recognition and file handling are fast; I can take them out and erase some of the pictures in the camera, then stick them right back in the reader and they both work fine.

The SanDisk card, OTOH, is only read properly about 1/3 of the time. Another third it shows up as empty (then when put back in the camera either still has the pictures or results in an error message requiring/requesting reformatting), and the final third of the time I get an "f:/drive is not accessible" error.

(I noticed on the datafab site a question in faq similar to mine - ie, 1st time card works, but taking it out and putting in again leads to problems - which seems like it was brushed off by datafab.)

Nevertheless, the problem I face is only with the SanDisk card as the IBM and Nikon cards I have can be read quickly and easily. Oh, and I checked the datafab site and it seems I do have the latest driver. So I'm stumped.

BTW, Staples refused an exchange on the card. Their policy is 14 days only (it's been 5 weeks). So much for my EVER buying a product like that there again. If they're going to charge more, IMO they ought to be doing more for their customers.

Off soapbox ;)

Andre

PS: I'm going to call SanDisk during business hours next week to see if I can get this sorted.

Interesting that your Coolpix came with a Lexar card, while my 800 came with an 8mb Nikon-labeled SanDisk card. Considering the relationship that SNDK has had with Nikon, I was a bit surprised. But I guess their allocation still forces them to source CF from a SanDisk competitor and defendant.

If you showed up at the Nikon factory in the middle of the night with a truckload of hot CF's - I'm sure you could strike up a deal.
